Basics Baby Exclusive: How to shop the Sephora Spring Sale WISELY + Recommendations

So Sephora’s Spring Sale is back! Beauty Insiders, VIB and VIB Rouge members get to enjoy a 10% (Beauty Insider) and 15% (VIB and VIB Rouge) off all items in store and online, with VIB Rouge having first access today (18th April). The sale ends on 24th April for VIB and VIB Rouge, and a day earlier for Beauty Insiders. Way to go to make Rouge members feel special (rolls eyes, sarcasm)! This is one of two annual all-items sale that Sephora holds for members, the other being in November.

Now, many of you must be thinking what great savings you can reap by actively participating in this sale. Well, that could be true if you shop wisely. First, bear in mind that this is not a 50% off sale, like Ulta’s recent 21 days of beauty. It is only 10 to 15 percent, which really isn’t much. Think about this – if an item costs $50, a 10% sale would reduce it to $45, not including tax. That’s a saving of less than $5, but you would need to fork out almost $50 for that. So if you’re not spending wisely, you wouldn’t actually be saving from this sale.

Tip 1: Prioritize needs, not wants

As I’ve always advised, when it comes to sale, focus on your needs first. A sale is not a ticket to owning all the items you’re desiring, or products you find cute and cool to have, at least from the standpoint of a rational consumer. To benefit from a sale, you should prioritize items that have been a staple in your routine, your holy grail items and products that you would keep purchasing no matter sale season or not.

If your skincare items are from Sephora, and you are planning to use these products long term, then replenish your supply through this sale. In that way, you’d definitely be saving money since you would’ve needed to purchase those items anyway. If your staple makeup items (e.g. foundation, concealer or brow products) are running low, and you would’ve bought them sale or no sale, then take advantage of this sale to save some money. You get my point.

Tip 2: Get it if you would’ve gotten it

There are times when we really want to try something and have been impressed with the results of the tons of research you’ve conducted on the product, but the only thing stopping you from putting that item in the cart is its price. You wish it was cheaper. If the 10 or 15 percent off makes that product much more affordable for you, then go for it. This is your chance to finally own it at a price you may be comfortable with.

Tip 3: Sephora versus others

Let’s admit it. Sephora doesn’t quite have the best sale around. I personally very much prefer Ulta sale as I tend to save a lot more from that than a Sephora one. Ulta also offers more privileges for its Platinum members than Sephora does their Rouge members. So whenever there is a Sephora sale, I would always think about whether I could purchase the item at a lower price at Ulta, or even Nordstrom etc. If my answer is a yes, then I would skip purchasing the item during the Sephora sale. However, if the item is exclusive to Sephora, and I’m not able to obtain it at Ulta, I would then consider purchasing it during the sale.

Those are my two cents tips, which can be a helpful guide if you wish to be conservative in your expenses when shopping during this sale period. Below are a few of my personal recommendations for what you can purchase during this sale period. These are more of star items that are worthy and made more affordable and value for money with the sale prices!

Let me start off by saying that even without the spring sale, this palette is such a great value for your money. With the sale, it makes it an even more attractive deal. If you’re into contouring and highlighting, and would like to own a palette that contains all that, look no further. The Kevyn Aucoin Contour Book Volume II contains full sizes of their best-selling contour and highlight creams and powders! The sculpting powder and the candlelight powder would have already cost you 88.00 USD. Now you’re also getting a cream contour and highlight, in addition to four beautiful eyeshadow colors for less than 60 bucks. If this is not called savings, I don’t know what is.

In addition to these, of course your primer/foundation/concealer/eyeshadow palette/lipstick/etc of your choice that you need and would’ve bought anyway sale or no sale would be great buys that can save you some money. I wish you great strength and restraint throughout this sale period. Till the next one!
